📜 Reference legal text — Article 36 (1)

Drivers of animal-drawn vehicles, special vehicles with a maximum authorised mass not exceeding 3,500 kilograms, cycles, mopeds, vehicles for persons with reduced mobility or vehicles following cyclists, where there is no road or part of a road specially intended for them, shall drive on the hard shoulder on their right, if it is passable and sufficient for each of them, and, if it is not, they shall use the strictly necessary part of the roadway.

Drivers of vehicles whose maximum authorised mass does not exceed 3,500 kilograms which, for reasons of emergency, travel at an abnormally reduced speed, thereby seriously disrupting traffic, must also drive on the hard shoulder on their right, if it is passable and sufficient, and, if it is not, on the strictly necessary part of the roadway.

On long descents with bends, when safety reasons allow it, and except on dual carriageways where they shall in any case ride on the hard shoulder, cyclists may leave the hard shoulder and ride on the right-hand part of the roadway that they need.
