1. 🚌 Bus maneuvers

1.1 Merging into traffic

Drivers joining from a stop, private property, or a service area must:

• ✅ Make sure they can perform the maneuver safely.
• ⚠️ Signal properly.
• ↪ Yield to other road users.

On an acceleration lane:

• 🚶‍♂️ Accelerate progressively and yield if necessary.
• 🚗 Merge without obstructing.

Other drivers must facilitate the maneuver for buses leaving marked stops by moving over or reducing speed.

1.2 Lane change

Must be done with the turn signal 🛈 and after checking it creates no danger.

2. ⏩ Overtaking

Overtaking must be done at a higher speed ↗️. When passing vulnerable users 🚲 (pedestrians, cyclists or groups of cyclists, mopeds, personal mobility vehicles, animals or animal-drawn vehicles) you must leave a lateral clearance of at least 1.5 m on any road; if the carriageway has more than one lane per direction a complete lane change is compulsory, and outside built-up areas you must also reduce your speed by at least 20 km/h below the road limit (since 1 October 2026, RD 518/2026). A group of cyclists counts as a single unit.

2.1 Duties of the vehicle being overtaken

• 🛏️ Move closer to the right.
• ❌ Do not increase speed.

Large vehicles should indicate they can be overtaken → right indicator or a hand signal.

2.2 Prohibitions

Overtaking is prohibited at:

• ⛔ Pedestrian crossings 🚬.
• ❌ Bends, intersections, level crossings, one-lane tunnels, etc.

Exception: It may be done past slow vehicles if there is no danger.

3. ↺ Changing direction

It must be done:

• With sufficient anticipation ⏳.
• Signaling and moving into the deceleration lane.

4. ↶ Reversing

Prohibited except:

• ❌ When the maneuver is indispensable.
• ⌛ Max. 15 meters without entering intersections.

Prohibited on motorways/expressways.

5. ❌ Immobilizations

5.1 Emergency stop

• 🚨 Use hazard lights.
• 🛋️ Wear a reflective vest when getting out.
• 🚩 Place warning triangles 50 m away, visible from 100 m.

5.2 In a tunnel or underpass

• 🛏️ Go to the lay-by or the right side.
• 📱 Use SOS posts if necessary.
• 🚒 In case of fire, leave doors open and evacuate opposite the fire.

5.3 At a level crossing or movable bridge

Evacuate quickly 🏋️‍♂️ and warn others if the vehicle cannot be removed.

5.4 Towing

Only permitted to tow accident-damaged vehicles on roads other than motorways/expressways.

6. 🛍️ Stops and parking

• ✅ Allowed on urban roads if at least 3 meters of clearance is left.
• ❌ Prohibited on bends, pedestrian crossings, bus lanes, emergency zones.

Prohibition markings:

• 🚦 Solid yellow curb line: always prohibited.
• ⚠️ Zigzag marking: reserved for special uses.

Securing the vehicle

• 🚗 Switch off the engine, apply the parking brake.
• ⇪ 1st gear on an uphill slope, reverse on a downhill.
• 🏤 Heavy vehicles must use wheel chocks properly.
