General rules and right of way for cyclists

General rules and right of way for cyclists is one of the topics in the Priority block of the Spanish DGT theory. Who goes first: right-of-way rules at junctions, roundabouts, narrow sections and special cases. Understanding this section well helps you answer the theory-exam questions on this topic with confidence.

In practice, this comes down to the following:

  • When riding on a properly marked bike lane, bicycle crossing or hard shoulder.
  • When the motor vehicle turns right or left to enter another road, in the permitted cases, and there is a cyclist nearby.
  • When driving in a group, the first one has already started crossing or has entered a roundabout.

In short, the rule makes sure every road user knows what to expect in this situation.

Priority questions use concrete situations (junctions, roundabouts, narrow sections): first work out who has right of way and why.

📜 Reference legal text — Article 64

As a general rule, and whenever their paths intersect, drivers have priority of passage for their vehicles on the roadway and on the hard shoulder with respect to pedestrians and animals, except in the cases listed in articles 65 and 66, in which they must let them pass, even stopping if necessary.

Cyclists have priority of passage over other vehicles:

a) When riding on a properly marked cycle lane, cycle crossing or hard shoulder.

b) When the motor vehicle or moped turns right or left to enter another road, in the permitted cases, and there is a cyclist nearby.

c) When riding in a group, the first cyclist has already begun to cross or has entered a roundabout.

In all other cases, the general rules on priority of passage between vehicles shall apply.
