Use of lanes

Use of lanes is one of the topics in the Vehicle movement block of the Spanish DGT theory. How vehicles must move on the road: direction of travel, position on the carriageway, speed and distances. Understanding this section well helps you answer the theory-exam questions on this topic with confidence.

In practice, this comes down to the following:

  • On roads with two-way traffic and two lanes, whether or not separated by road markings, you must drive on the lane on your right.
  • On roads with two-way traffic and three lanes separated by discontinuous longitudinal markings, you must also drive on the lane on your right and, under no circumstances, on the lane on your left.

In short, the rule makes sure every road user knows what to expect in this situation.

Questions here combine speed, lane position and distances: always check whether the road is urban or interurban.

📜 Reference legal text — Article 30 (1)

The driver of a car or special vehicle with a maximum authorised mass exceeding 3,500 kilograms must drive on the roadway and not on the hard shoulder, except for emergency reasons. In addition, he must comply with the following rules:

  • On roads with two-way traffic and two lanes, whether or not separated by road markings, you must drive on the lane on your right.
  • On roads with two-way traffic and three lanes separated by discontinuous longitudinal markings, you must also drive on the lane on your right and, under no circumstances, on the lane on your left.

On these roads, the centre lane will only be used for necessary overtaking and for changing direction to the left.
