The signs in the «Horizontal traffic signs» group belong to the VIII. Road markings block of the Spanish DGT theory.

On this page you have the complete catalogue of these signs with their image, official code and meaning, exactly as they may appear in the driving-licence theory exam.

The nomenclature of horizontal traffic signs is as follows: a) Yield. A triangle marked on the road with the vertex opposite the shorter side and pointing towards the approaching vehicle indicates to the driver that he or she must give way to other vehicles at the next intersection. If the triangle is located in a lane marked by longitudinal lines, the above obligation applies exclusively to vehicles travelling in the said lane. b) Mandatory stopping or stop sign. The "stop" symbol, marked on the road, indicates to the driver the obligation to stop his vehicle at the next stop line or, if there is no stop line, immediately before the road he is approaching, and to give way to vehicles travelling on that road. If the aforementioned symbol is located in a lane delimited by longitudinal lines, the above obligation refers exclusively to vehicles travelling on the aforementioned lane. c) Speed limit sign. Indicates that no vehicle must exceed the speed indicated in kilometres per hour. If the sign is located on a lane marked by longitudinal lines, the above prohibition applies exclusively to vehicles travelling on the said lane. The established limit applies until the next “End of limit”, “End of speed limit” or other different maximum speed sign. (d) Lane selection arrow. An arrow in a lane marked by longitudinal lines indicates that all drivers must follow the direction, or one of the directions, indicated by the arrow in the lane in which they are located or, if signs permit, change to another lane. This arrow may be supplemented by a destination inscription. e) Exit arrow. Indicates to drivers where they can begin changing lanes to take an exit and the direction of the exit. f) Lane end arrow. Indicates that the lane in which it is located ends soon and that it is necessary to follow its indication. g) Return arrow. An arrow, located approximately on the centre line of a two-way carriageway and pointing to the right, announces the proximity of a continuous line implying that driving on the left is prohibited and therefore indicates that all drivers must drive their vehicle as soon as possible in the lane to the right of the arrow.

💡 In the exam you will be shown the image of the sign and must recognise its meaning: look at the shape and colour to work out which group it belongs to.
