Defines who the traffic rules apply to and where, the basic definitions and the principles behind the whole theory. Understanding this section well helps you answer the theory-exam questions on this topic with confidence.

In simple terms, this point of the DGT theory establishes that in any case, the load protruding behind the vehicles referred to in paragraphs 2 and 3 must be marked by means of the V-20 sign referred to in Article 173 and whose characteristics are set out in Annex XI of the General Vehicle Regulations. This sign must be placed at the rear end of the load so that it is constantly perpendicular to the axis of the vehicle.

The exam often asks where and to whom these rules apply; read the options carefully, as they frequently change a single word.

In any case, the load protruding behind the vehicles referred to in paragraphs 2 and 3 must be marked by means of the V-20 sign referred to in Article 173 and whose characteristics are established in Annex XI of the General Vehicle Regulations. This sign must be placed at the rear end of the load so that it is constantly perpendicular to the axis of the vehicle. When the load protrudes longitudinally across the entire width of the rear of the vehicle, two signaling panels must be placed transversely, each at one end of the load or the width of the protruding material. Both panels must be placed in such a way that they form an inverted "V" shape.

When the vehicle is travelling between sunset and sunrise or under weather or environmental conditions that significantly reduce visibility, the load must also be marked with a red light. When the load protrudes from the front, it must be marked with a white light.
