π Number plates: general regulations
All motor vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers must display number plates that are visible and legible for proper identification.
- π Type-approved dimensions: flat, rectangular and retro-reflective.
- π They must be well maintained, clean and clearly visible at all times.
- π‘ The rear plate must be illuminated from sunset to sunrise and in adverse weather conditions.
- π« It is forbidden to place decorations, stickers or advertising on the number plates.
- β Prohibition of unauthorised additional plates or painted badges that hinder legibility.
π Types of plates by vehicle
π Motor vehicles
- πΉ Two mandatory plates: one front and one rear.
- πΉ They must be mounted vertically at the centre of the vehicle.
- πΉ If centring is not possible, the front plate may be on the left or right, and the rear on the left side.
ποΈ Mopeds and motorcycles
- πΉ A single rear plate, vertically centred on the mudguard.
π Special agricultural and public-works vehicles
- πΉ One rear plate located in the centre or on the left side, in a vertical position.
- πΉ No front plate required.
π Trailers and semi-trailers
- πΉ MAM over 750 kg: own rear plate plus a plate with the towing vehicleβs registration (right side).
- πΉ MAM equal to or under 750 kg: a single rear plate with the towing vehicleβs registration (centre or left).
π§ͺ Special test or research plates
Issued to manufacturers for exceptional technical tests on public roads.
- π These plates allow increasing the maximum speed by up to 30 km/h over the general limit.
- ποΈ Conventional roads: up to 120 km/h (90 km/h + 30 km/h).
- π£οΈ Motorways/dual carriageways: up to 150 km/h (120 km/h + 30 km/h).
π¨ Important prohibitions and penalties
Failure to comply with plate regulations may result in significant penalties:
- π° Fines between β¬200 and β¬500 for illegible or modified plates.
- π Possible immobilisation of the vehicle until the infringement is corrected.
- π« It is forbidden to alter dimensions or colour, or to add decorative elements.
