C1 and C Driving Licences + CAP

1️⃣ Driving Licences for Categories C1 and C

📌 To obtain the C1 or C licences you must already hold a B licence ✅ (no minimum holding period required).

🔹 C1 Licence

  • 🧒 Minimum age: 18 years
  • 🚚 Authorises driving vehicles with:
    • Maximum authorised mass (MAM/MMA) over 3,500 kg and under 7,500 kg
    • Designed to carry up to 8 passengers + driver
    • Excludes vehicles in categories D1 or D

🔹 Harmonised Code 97 🧳

  • Allows driving vehicles covered by C1 and C1+E non-professionally (for example: motorhomes 🚐)
  • You must pass the same tests as for those licences (except some listed in Annex V of the Drivers’ Regulations)

🔹 C Licence

  • 🧓 Minimum age: 21 years
  • Requires having obtained the C1 licence beforehand
  • Authorises driving:
    • 🚛 Vehicles with MAM over 3,500 kg
    • Designed to carry up to 8 passengers + driver
    • 🚐 May tow light trailers (up to 750 kg MAM)
    • If the trailer exceeds 750 kg, the E entitlement is required
  • ❌ Does not authorise the transport of dangerous goods
  • 🟡 For non-agricultural special vehicles with a top speed ≤ 40 km/h and fewer than 9 occupants (including the driver), the licence corresponding to their MAM is required. If they do not exceed 40 km/h, the B licence is sufficient.

2️⃣ Licence Validity 📅

👤 Driver’s age ⏳ Licence validity
Up to 65 years 5 years
Over 65 years 3 years

⚠️ The validity period may be reduced if the holder has an illness or impairment that could worsen.

🐀񐐠Licences can be renewed if the driver:

  • Maintains the required conditions 🚦
  • Has not lost all licence points 🚫

🚫 If the licence is expired, you may not drive with it and it will be seized immediately by traffic officers.

3️⃣ Certificate of Professional Competence (CAP) 📚

🎓 Mandatory training for certain professional drivers:

  • ✔️ Initial qualification: Obtained separately from the driving licence.
  • 🔁 Periodic training: Required to keep knowledge up to date.
  • 🌍 Required in Spain for drivers of EU companies holding:
    • C1, C1+E, C, C+E, D1, D1+E, D, D+E

📜 The CAP certifies that the driver has passed the official courses and exams.

📌 It has no fixed expiry, but its validity depends on completing periodic training.
