Vehicle Controls: A Complete Guide to Safe Driving

To drive correctly it’s essential to know and properly use all the vehicle controls, both those operated with your feet and those used with your hands. Below we explain these controls in detail and how to adjust them correctly for safe, comfortable driving 🚗💨.

🪑 1. Seat and Backrest Adjustment

Before starting, adjust the seat so you can comfortably reach the pedals and the steering wheel. Your back should remain fully in contact with the backrest. This ensures optimal control and visibility 🦶👀.

  • 👣 Reach the pedals without stretching.
  • 👐 Reach the steering wheel without overextending your arms.
  • 📏 Your height should allow you to see the road over the wheel.

🦶 2. Foot-operated controls

⚡ 2.1 Accelerator Pedal

Regulates the amount of fuel entering the engine. Careful! Flooring it greatly increases fuel consumption ⛽.

🛑 2.2 Brake Pedal

Used to slow down or stop. It should always be pressed smoothly, except in emergencies 🚨.

🔁 2.3 Clutch Pedal

Allows you to change gears without damaging the engine. Watch the friction (biting) point to avoid stalling!

✋ 3. Hand controls

🔄 3.1 Steering Wheel

Hold it at the “9 and 3” position 🕘 with both hands. Never cross your arms when turning, and don’t rest your elbow on the window 🚫.

🅿️ 3.2 Parking Brake

Keeps the vehicle immobilized when not in use. It’s a lever that actuates the rear brakes.

⚙️ 3.3 Gear Lever

Lets you select the appropriate gear according to the speed and power needed. It’s located between the front seats.

Gear Use Speed
1st Starting off and hills Low
2nd – 4th City and road Medium
5th – 6th Expressway / motorway High

💡 4. Other Hand Controls

  • 🚨 Turn indicators: Inform other users about lane changes or turns.
  • 🌙 Lights: Adjust to traffic and weather conditions.
  • 🌧️ Wipers: Clear water from the windshield. Mandatory if the vehicle has a windshield.
  • 🔊 Horn: Acoustic warning. Abusive use is prohibited.
  • 🔐 Anti-theft device: Locks the car when parked.

🛵 5. Particularities on Motorcycles

Controls are on the handlebar and at the feet:

  • ✊ Right grip: Throttle
  • ✋ Left lever: Clutch, lights, and horn
  • 🦶 Left foot: Gear shift
  • 🦶 Right foot: Rear brake

🌬️ 6. Vehicle Interior

It should have proper temperature and ventilation to avoid drowsiness 🥱. Neither too hot nor too cold. Use ventilation or climate control for a safe, comfortable environment.

🔍 7. Instrument Panel

Includes important indicators such as:

  • ⛽ Fuel level
  • ⚠️ Warning lights
  • 🕹️ RPM and speed
  • 💡 Light status

📌 Knowing each control is key to driving safely and efficiently!
