📍 What is an intersection?
An intersection is a point on the road where multiple paths cross or converge. It is one of the highest-risk areas in traffic 🚗⚠️.
🧭 1. Behavior at an intersection
🔍 1.1 Approach phase
- 📌 Look ahead and observe traffic in advance.
- 🕹️ Signal your intention to turn (left or right).
- 🚗 Adjust your speed to the traffic conditions.
🛣️ 1.2 Position on the roadway
It depends on the turn:
- 🔄 Right turn: as close as possible to the right edge.
- ↪️ Left turn: on one-way roads, keep to the left edge; on two-way roads, keep next to the center line without crossing it.
🐢 1.3 Speed adjustment
Reduce speed especially if visibility is low or if there are signs such as STOP or Yield.
🚧 2. Signed intersections
- ⚠️ Yield: Stopping isn’t required, but you must give way.
- 🛑 STOP: A complete stop is mandatory before the stop line.
- 🚦 Traffic lights: Obey lights and arrow indications.
- 👮♂️ Traffic officers: An officer’s signals take precedence over any other control.
❌ 3. Unsignposted intersections
Apply the general rule to yield to the vehicle approaching from the right, except for:
- 🛣️ A paved road has priority over an unpaved road.
- 🌀 In roundabouts, vehicles already inside have priority.
- 🚴 Cyclists riding in a group have priority if the first rider has already entered.
🚗 4. Crossing an intersection
Proceed with caution, following the signage and respecting right-of-way. ⚖️
📊 5. Right-of-way on the road
📑 5.1 At intersections
| Type of intersection | Right-of-way rule |
|---|---|
| Signed | Obey officers, traffic lights, vertical signs, and road markings (in that order). |
| Unsignposted | Yield to the vehicle on the right, except for the noted exceptions. |
🪜 5.2 Narrow sections
Yield to the vehicle that entered first or, if in doubt, to the one with greater difficulty maneuvering:
- 🚛 Special vehicles
- 🚚 Vehicle combinations
- 🐴 Animal-drawn vehicles
- 🚐 Vehicles with trailers
- 🚌 Public transport vehicles
- 🚒 Trucks and vans
- 🚗 Passenger cars
- 🛺 Light quadricycles
- 🛵 Motorcycles with sidecar
- 🏍️ Motorcycles and bicycles
⛰️ 5.3 Sections with a gradient
Priority goes to the vehicle traveling uphill (harder to maneuver). The downhill vehicle must yield if there is a turnout.
🚧 5.4 Road works
Obey yellow signs 🚧 or instructions from roadwork personnel.
🚉 6. Level crossings and movable bridges
- 🔔 Never overtake at level crossings.
- 🚨 Obey barriers, lights, or traffic signals.
- 🏃♂️ If you become stopped on the tracks, leave the vehicle and signal the hazard.
🚇 7. Tunnels and underpasses
- ❌ Prohibited: stopping, parking, U-turns, or reversing.
- 💡 Always use appropriate lights.
- 🆘 In an emergency: sidelights + hazard lights + safe evacuation.
🚶♂️ 8. Pedestrian crossings
Drivers must yield to pedestrians who have already started to cross. Overtaking on crossings is prohibited.
🚴 9. Cyclist crossings
Marked with parallel broken white lines. Cyclists have priority over other vehicles (not only motor vehicles) when they ride on a cycle lane, cyclist crossing or signposted hard shoulder; when a motor vehicle or moped turns left or right to enter another road and a cyclist is nearby; and, when riding in a group, once the first rider has already started crossing or entered a roundabout (since 1 October 2026, RD 518/2026).
