Driver Abilities: Factors that Affect Road Safety

Driving requires full attention, optimal physical condition, and mental agility. However, various factors can diminish the driver’s abilities and increase the risk of an accident. 🚗⚠️

👤 1. The Driver

Every driver must meet certain physical, psychological, and cognitive requirements to ensure safe driving. These requirements vary by license type (for example, B is not the same as C or D). The assessment must be carried out at a Driver Recognition Center.

🔎 2. Factors affecting psychophysical abilities

😴 2.1 Fatigue

  • Causes exhaustion, longer reaction times, and loss of attention.
  • Factors: monotonous roads, poor posture, excessive heating.
  • 🛑 Solution: Rest every 2–3 hours and avoid heavy meals.

😤 2.2 Stress

  • Increases aggressiveness, poor decisions, and reckless driving.
  • Reduces the ability to concentrate and react.

😟 2.3 Depression

  • Leads to distraction, insecurity, and decision-making errors.

👁️‍🗨️ 2.4 Reduced Attention

  • Causes: drowsiness, medications, excessive heat, heavy meals.

🛌 2.5 Sleepiness or Drowsiness

Reduces reflexes and increases errors. Avoid long night drives.

👁️ 2.6 Vision

Common issues:

  • 👓 Glare (sun or headlights)
  • 👀 Loss of lateral visual field
  • 💡 Night driving = greater difficulty

👂 2.7 Hearing

It is key for perceiving the surroundings. People with impairments can obtain a license with mirror adaptations.

⏱️ 2.8 Reaction Time

Normal range: 0.5–1 second. Factors that alter it:

  • Advanced age
  • Medications and alcohol
  • Fatigue or illnesses such as flu or rheumatism

💊 2.9 Drugs, Caffeine, and Medications

  • ❌ Driving under their effects is prohibited
  • 💊 Side effects: dizziness, drowsiness, blurred vision
  • ☕ Caffeine can affect heart rate

🍷 2.10 Alcohol Intoxication

Type of Driver Maximum Permitted Level (mg/l)
General 0.25
New drivers, school or goods transport 0.15

Blood alcohol multiplies accident risk and reduces reflexes, distance perception, and emotional control.

👕 2.11 Driver Clothing

  • Comfortable, loose-fitting clothing
  • Flexible footwear, without thick soles or heels
  • 👢 Motorcyclists: leather suit, gloves, boots. Since 1 October 2026 (RD 518/2026) protective gloves are compulsory on interurban roads and closed footwear covering the whole foot is compulsory on all roads (fine 200 €); the helmet must be UNECE R22 homologated

🛡️ Final Recommendations

  • 🛌 Get adequate rest before driving
  • 🧘 Reduce stress with breathing techniques or breaks
  • 🚫 Do not drive under the influence of alcohol or medications
  • 👓 Use glasses or sun visors on sunny days

Safe driving starts with knowing yourself. Take care of your physical and mental condition before setting off! 🛣️🚘
