DGT exam appointment: step-by-step guide 📅

Quick answer: A DGT appointment is booked free of charge online at the electronic office (sede.dgt.gob.es, «Cita previa» section) or by calling 060. If you go through a driving school, the school manages your exam slot; you mainly need an appointment for Jefatura procedures and for the independent («por libre») exam.

How to book, step by step

  1. Go to sede.dgt.gob.es and find «Cita previa» (or call 060, automated line 24 h).
  2. Choose the Jefatura or Traffic Office of your province.
  3. Under procedure type, select «Trámites de oficina» (to submit the independent exam application).
  4. Enter your details (DNI/NIE) and confirm the day and time.
  5. Save the confirmation: you'll be asked for the reference code on arrival.

Tip: book about two weeks before your target exam date, and pay the fee (€94.05) before you go.

Documents to apply for the independent exam

  • Official exam application form.
  • Valid DNI or passport (EU nationals: registration certificate; non-EU: valid residence permit).
  • Medical fitness certificate (psicotécnico) from an authorised centre — valid 90 days for submission.
  • Proof of payment of the €94.05 fee.
  • Declaration that you are not banned from driving.

You can also submit everything online via the Electronic Registry with cl@ve, an electronic DNI or a digital certificate. Full guide: the independent exam step by step.

No slots available? What to do

Slots are released in batches: check the site first thing in the morning and again during the day — cancellations reappear. You can choose any Jefatura, not just your city's: neighbouring provinces often have more availability. And beware of websites charging to «get you a slot»: the official procedure is always free.
